Archaeology and Art History of the Late Antique and Byzantine World

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

Building upon the BA, students will acquire in-depth knowledge of the Late Classical Period and Byzantine world, especially in regard to their material and artistic legacy. They will examine the content, genre geography and epoch of subject-related topics. Students will become confident in assessing even complex material, artistic and iconographic characteristics and in socially interpreting findings. Students will apply differentiated methods of questioning, interpreting and presenting cultural evidence (source study, exploration techniques incl. excavations, documentation, works analysis, iconography, style critique, dealing with non-artistic objects, conservation, scientific writing, media didactics). Students will be able to recognize the gaps in the information that is currently available and to specifically tackle them in an original manner. They will be well prepared to explore special literature and to critically assess the available opinions of researchers. They will be able to adequately present their findings and results to an expert audience as well as a general audience.
