The ALPHA (ArchaeoLogies and PHilologies in Ancient Studies) program focuses on early epochs of human culture, exploring the secrets of past societies through archaeological, written, and material evidence of past civilizations. This innovative program offers a unique combination of broad interdisciplinary training and in-depth expertise in disciplines such as Egyptology, Ancient Oriental Studies, Byzantine Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Classical Philology, Near Eastern Archaeology, and Prehistoric and Early Historical Archaeology. Students reconstruct and research the beginnings of human evolution and the development of the first civilizations in human history up to the 15th century using various scientific, archaeological, art historical, philological, and digital methods. The program offers numerous opportunities to gain practical experience and acquire additional professional skills. Students benefit from the close networking and various cooperations of the subjects in the Institute for Ancient Studies and the Institute for Art History and Musicology, as well as external research institutions, universities, and museums in and around Mainz.
