About the Program

The Master's program 'Anglophone Popular Culture' focuses on popular cultural texts and processes of the Anglophone world in relation to historical, political and social contexts. The central qualification goal is to develop knowledge and analytical competencies regarding manifestations of Anglophone popular culture in various media (books, magazines, music, comics, film and TV, video games, social media), their reception, and cultural diagnostic and critical potential. The program aims to provide in-depth knowledge in these areas with opportunities for specialization in specific media. In addition to solid foundational knowledge, the program enables a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of language and culture of the Anglophone world. The program prepares students for both academic careers and the non-university job market by strengthening their intercultural competencies and problem-solving skills. All courses are conducted in English.

The program consists of five modules:
Module I: Approaching Anglophone Popular Culture Studies - Foundation of theory and methodology for (Anglophone) popular culture.
Module II: Focus on Genre and Media - Seminars on specific genres or media of Anglophone popular culture.
Module III: Cultural Criticism and Popular Culture - Examines concrete connections between Anglophone popular culture and broader cultural discourses.
Module IV: Critical Perspectives in/on Anglophone Popular Culture - Planning and implementation of an independent research project.
Module V: Media Matters - Language practice focusing on production, reception, and evaluation of key text forms in Anglophone popular culture.
