Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Bachelor's degree program in English and American Studies aims to enable students to critically and reflectively engage with the English language and culture and their manifestations in literary and non-literary texts. This includes not only the acquisition of appropriate theories and methods for dealing with English-language texts but also the acquisition of communicative and cultural competencies, i.e., against the background of the global spread of English, the acquisition of knowledge about English-speaking cultures and population groups. Since it involves dealing with language, literature, and culture in a foreign language context, students experience a cultural change of perspective through working with and on these 'texts,' which enables a better understanding of their own and foreign cultures. The program is divided into the following areas: Language Practice, Literary Studies (literature of England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, North America, and selected postcolonial literatures), Cultural Studies (aspects of Great Britain, Ireland, and North America), Linguistics, and additional studies including a second subject and interdisciplinary elective area.
