About the Program

The BA program in English and American Studies provides an overview of the structure and historical development of the English language and British/American literature in a cultural-historical context. Students are familiarized with essential literary and linguistic theories and methods through selected problem areas and questions. The program is divided into three areas: English Literature Studies (covering English-language literature from the Middle Ages to the present, with emphasis on the modern period since the late 16th century), American Literature and Cultural Studies (covering all aspects of United States literature and culture from the 17th century to the present), and English Linguistics (dealing with the structure of the English language, its historical development, regional variations, communicative functions, and significance in English-speaking regions). Students acquire cultural and historical knowledge, central literary and linguistic competencies, and the ability to apply these scientifically in future careers. Additionally, students develop English language proficiency at a level that enables confident and differentiated communication in both oral and written forms in all academic areas.
