Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

American Studies is an interdisciplinary program taught entirely in English that focuses on understanding the United States through its history, culture, politics, and society. The program combines literary and cultural studies to examine the USA's influence in the world. Students study US traditions, values, and political and religious movements (e.g., #MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter) against the background of American history and current politics. The curriculum includes analysis of American literature, the political system, immigration history, and identity issues in a pluralistic society. Students also gain insight into the social and political role of US media (from books and films to social media). The program allows for specialization in literature and history/culture from the 3rd semester onward. This is a dual subject bachelor's degree program consisting of a core subject and a secondary subject that can be combined according to students' interests or career goals. The program requires 180 ECTS credits and includes a mandatory internship of at least four weeks (which can alternatively be replaced by a study abroad period of at least three months). Graduates typically work in German-American cooperation institutions, politics and social organizations, international organizations, tourism and event management, education and culture, information and communication management, media and journalism, or public relations.
