Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The Master's program in Ancient Studies embeds the specialized knowledge acquired in the major subject in the interdisciplinary context of Ancient Studies. Ancient History, Greek Studies, Classical Archaeology, Latin Studies, and Prehistory and Early History share the common goal of developing a differentiated picture of ancient cultures based on often highly fragmentary sources. The first four disciplines focus on Greek and Roman culture in the context of other ancient cultures. The program consists of eleven modules, including three compulsory modules, six according to the major subject, and two from elective areas. In the 4th semester, the master's thesis is written and defended in a colloquium. The design of the internship module is already oriented towards the desired professional fields. Graduates acquire the ability to analyze complex relationships, work independently, comprehend complex texts precisely and quickly, and understand ancient rhetorical theory and practice as the basis of communicative processes. The acquired skills allow either continuation of studies in a doctoral program or employment in museums, libraries, and publishing houses, as well as in seemingly unrelated professional fields such as politics, media, business, and industry.
