Studienkolleg

Is a Studienkolleg admission letter enough for a German student visa?

✓ Answered · 2 min read · 126 views

Not on its own – but it is the right kind of admission for a study visa. If your acceptance to a Studienkolleg is proven, attending it counts as a preparatory measure (studienvorbereitende Maßnahme) within the study purpose of § 16b(1) of the Residence Act, so your application is assessed as a regular study visa. If acceptance can't be proven, only the discretionary § 16b(5) applies.

What else do you need?

The leaflet of the German missions in Türkiye says an admission from a Studienkolleg or university makes the examination easier – the basic requirements still apply:

  • Proof of university entrance qualification (HZB), e.g. your school-leaving certificate
  • Proof of funds: blocked account (Sperrkonto) or formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) – €992 per month, €11,904 per year for 2026
  • Passport, application via the Auslandsportal, proof of health insurance
  • Language certificate: the level your Studienkolleg requires for admission; there is no universal "B2 required" rule.

The binding list is the mission's current checklist in the Auslandsportal.

Does admission guarantee the visa?

No. The mission decides, looking at whether your documents are complete, your funding is sufficient and your study plan is consistent.

Applying with conditional admission

If your admission depends on a language course or another condition, our guide to visas with conditional admission explains which leaflet and language level apply.

Is the extension after Studienkolleg automatic?

No. Studienkolleg and the degree that follows belong to the same study purpose; the residence permit is usually issued for two years (at least one) and extended as long as you can still reach the goal within a reasonable time. But after the Feststellungsprüfung and your university admission/enrolment you have to apply to the Ausländerbehörde for the extension. If you apply before your permit expires, it remains valid until the decision (§ 81(4) Residence Act).
