Question 1

Is it possible to do a master's degree for free in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Often, yes: most master's programmes at state universities charge no tuition. But not everywhere — there are important exceptions for students from outside the EU.
#Exceptions

Baden-Württemberg: international students coming from outside the EU pay 1,500 € per semester (Turkish citizens count as non-EU). Exemptions exist, for example for non-Germans with a German HZB, exchange students under partnership agreements and doctoral candidates.
TUM (Bavaria, example): since WS 2024/25, newly enrolled non-EU master's students usually pay 4,000 or 6,000 € per semester, depending on the programme. DAAD also notes that Bavarian universities may charge non-EU students.
Continuing-education (weiterbildende) master's programmes: these charge fees; the amount depends on the programme.

#The semester contribution is not tuition
Every student pays a Semesterbeitrag each semester. It funds the Studierendenwerk and student self-government and, according to DAAD, is roughly 70–430 €. At many universities it includes a semester ticket.
#What to do
Check the fee page of each university before you apply. The university also decides whether you apply directly, through uni-assist or with a VPD — a VPD is not a standard step for every master's application.

Question 2

Can I get unconditional master's admission in Germany with Goethe B2?

Accepted Answer

It depends entirely on the programme: there is no Germany-wide rule that "B2 is enough" or "C1 is required" for a master's. The university and programme decide which language certificates they accept and at what level.
#German-taught programmes

Many ask for DSH or TestDaF; whether a Goethe certificate is accepted, and at which level, varies by programme.
If you meet the level the programme requires, unconditional admission is possible; if not, the university's own rules decide what happens.

#English-taught programmes

Here the English proof (e.g. IELTS/TOEFL) and any German requirement are set by the programme. Some ask for no German at all.

#Conditional admission (bedingte Zulassung)

Some universities admit you on condition that you meet the language requirement later. What that condition involves follows the university's rules.
According to the German missions in Türkiye, the university's own language exam is the binding threshold, and a new application may be needed once you meet the language requirement.

#What to do
Read the "Sprachnachweis" section of your target programme and check in writing whether Goethe B2 is accepted. If in doubt, ask the university's international office.

Question 3

Can you get admitted to a Master's or Bachelor's program in Germany with a low GPA?

Accepted Answer

Admission with a low GPA can be possible, because Germany has no nationwide minimum GPA and no fixed NC threshold. The program's own requirements and that semester's applicant pool decide.
#Master's

Each university and program sets its own requirements: subject fit of your bachelor's, grade, language and documents.
Some programs set a grade requirement, others don't; check the program page.
In programs with restricted admission (NC), the cut-off results from the applicant pool and the selection rules. Values from previous years are no guarantee.

#Bachelor's

For a bachelor's application, the university looks at your HZB grade, not a university GPA.
Foreign grades are converted with the modified Bavarian formula. You don't choose the maximum and minimum grade values used in it, and the result is truncated to one decimal, not rounded. If you apply via uni-assist, uni-assist does the conversion.
A Studienkolleg does not "reset" your grade: if a Feststellungsprüfung is required, your overall grade is the mean of your foreign grade and the FSP grade.

#What you can do

Shortlist programs without a grade requirement or without restricted admission.
Compare requirements program by program. The university always makes the decision.

Source: KMK grade conversion rule · anabin guide

Question 4

What is NC and how does it affect your master's application?

Accepted Answer

NC (Numerus Clausus) means a program has restricted admission. It is not a fixed grade limit but a cut-off that results from that semester's applicant pool and the program's selection rules. There is no single Germany-wide NC value.
#How an NC comes about

If there are more applicants than places, the program ranks applicants according to its selection rules.
The value of the last admitted applicant becomes that semester's "NC" and can change next time. Previous years' values are no guarantee.
In programs without restricted admission, the program's admission requirements are what counts.

#Effect on your master's application

Every master's program sets its own requirements: subject fit of your bachelor's, grade, language and documents.
In a program with an NC, meeting the requirements may not be enough on its own; you enter a ranking.
Your foreign grade is converted with the modified Bavarian formula into the German scale, where 1.0 is the best grade.

#What to do

Check the program page for admission restrictions and selection rules.
Don't rely on one program; compare the requirements of several. The university decides.

Question 5

Can your bachelor's and master's be in different fields?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is possible — but the master's programme's admission requirements decide. In Germany each university and programme sets its own requirements, and the subject of your bachelor's is one of the key ones.
#What the university checks

Subject fit: do the courses in your bachelor's cover the foundation the master's expects?
Your grade, language proof and the required documents.
The university reviews your degree and transcript individually and makes the final decision.

#No fixed national rule

There is no public, fixed list of which bachelor's counts as suitable for which master's.
There is also no Germany-wide GPA, NC or language threshold.
Two programmes with the same name can ask for different backgrounds.

#How to approach it

Read the programme's admission requirements (Zulassungsvoraussetzungen) and compare them course by course with your transcript.
If you are unsure, contact the programme's advisory office with your transcript before applying.
Check requirements in the DAAD admission database and on the university's own page.
For the institution side, check in anabin whether your university is H+; H+ is only a prerequisite, not admission.

Question 6

How long is the job-search permit valid after a Master's in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Up to 18 months. If you have successfully completed your Master's (or another degree) in Germany, you can get a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months (§ 20 (1) no. 1 AufenthG). It cannot be extended beyond 18 months, and you need a secured livelihood.
Apply at the Ausländerbehörde before your student permit expires: if you do, your current permit is deemed to continue until the decision (§ 81 (4) AufenthG). If you find a suitable job during this time, you apply to switch to a work-based residence permit. If you have not found a job within 18 months, check early whether you meet the requirements for another permit (e.g. further studies); for a job search from abroad, separate routes exist, such as the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte, since 01.06.2024).

Question 7

How do you find PhD programs in Germany?

Accepted Answer

There are two routes to a PhD in Germany: an individual doctorate with a supervisor, or a structured doctoral programme. You find positions through official search portals and by contacting professors directly.
#Individual doctorate (the most common route)

You find a professor working on your topic (Doktorvater/Doktormutter) and write to them directly; it typically takes 3–5 years.
Even with a professor's agreement, the department or doctoral committee must confirm your eligibility as a doctoral candidate.
Grade, language and document requirements are set in the faculty's Promotionsordnung; there is no Germany-wide grade threshold.

#Structured programmes

Supervision by a team and a curriculum; typically 3–4 years.
Funding is not automatically included, so check each vacancy for a salary or scholarship.

#Where to search

PhDGermany: PhD openings aimed at international applicants
DAAD International Programmes: roughly 230 international doctoral programmes
GERiT and Higher Education Compass: search for institutes and research groups
DFG Research Training Groups, Helmholtz and Leibniz graduate schools, International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS)

#Fees
A doctorate at a state university is in principle free of tuition; if you enrol, you pay the semester contribution. Baden-Württemberg and TUM also exempt doctoral candidates from their non-EU tuition fees. TestAS is not listed by official sources as a requirement for doctoral admission.

Question 8

What are your options for a Public Health master's degree in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Germany has Public Health master's programmes, but no common set of requirements: each programme sets its own language, grade, document and selection rules. The two programmes below are examples only.
#Example 1: Bielefeld University – MSc Public Health

A completed first degree of at least 6 semesters (180 LP) from a university or a Fachhochschule.
A project draft of about 10 pages as the aptitude assessment.
Most teaching is in German, and proof of German is required.
You apply directly to the university; neither a ZAB statement nor a uni-assist VPD is needed.

#Example 2: Charité Berlin – MSc Public Health

The course language is German; only selected modules are taught in English.
Selection is based on your previous degree grade (55 percent) and a subject test (45 percent).

#Continuing-education (weiterbildende) master's
These programmes charge fees, and some require at least one year of professional experience. Details are in each programme's own regulations.
#How to find programmes
Search for "Public Health" in the DAAD international programmes database and the Higher Education Compass, then check each programme's application page for the teaching language, language certificate, admission requirements and deadlines. There is no Germany-wide English or German score requirement.

Question 9

How do Germany, Austria and Switzerland compare for a Master's in Computer Engineering?

Accepted Answer

The only part of this comparison that can currently be confirmed from official sources is tuition: in Germany, master's programmes at state universities are mostly tuition-free; Austria's public universities charge third-country students a fixed semester fee; in Switzerland fees depend on the institution.
#Germany (DE)

Most master's programmes at state universities charge no tuition; a semester contribution is paid separately.
Exceptions: Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students 1,500 € per semester. TUM (example) has charged newly enrolled non-EU master's students since WS 2024/25, usually 4,000 or 6,000 € per semester.

#Austria (AT)

At public universities, third-country students generally pay €726.72 per semester; exemptions apply in special cases.
Universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen) may set their own fees.

#Switzerland (CH)

Fees are set per institution. Example: ETH Zurich charges foreign students CHF 2,190 per semester from the autumn semester 2025.

#Check the other factors separately
Programme content, language requirements, visas, work rights while studying, post-graduation job-search periods, blocked-account amounts and living costs differ by country and institution. We do not give figures for them here — check the university's pages and the relevant country's immigration authority for current information before deciding.

Question 10

Is an online master's degree valid in Germany?

Accepted Answer

There is no general yes or no: how an online master's degree is treated in Germany depends on the awarding institution's anabin status, the rating of the degree type and who is asking for it (a university, an employer or an authority).
#What to look at in anabin

Institution status (Institutionen): H+ means the institution is regarded as a higher-education institution. It only means the degree can undergo an equivalence assessment, not that it is automatically recognised. H+/- institutions are assessed separately; H- institutions are not regarded as higher-education institutions.
Degree type (Hochschulabschlüsse → Abschlusstypen): ratings such as "entspricht", "gleichwertig" or "bedingt vergleichbar" are not a recognition decision either.

#For a PhD or another master's
The university decides on admission and checks your degree individually; it may ask ZAB.
#For jobs and visas
A ZAB Statement of Comparability places a foreign higher-education degree in the German system and is used for visas and the EU Blue Card, by employers (e.g. the public sector) and by authorities. It costs €208 and usually takes about 3 months. It gives no admission rights, and regulated professions such as medicine, teaching or law need recognition by the competent body.
#Practical step
Check the institution and the degree type in anabin before you enrol. anabin is not complete; binding information comes only from the competent Land offices.

Question 11

Can I change universities during my Master's thesis process?

Accepted Answer

Question 12

Is a Master's admission letter sufficient for a visa application?

Accepted Answer

Question 13

How do master's and PhD programmes in dentistry work in Germany?

Accepted Answer

There is no single "master's route" for dentists in Germany: to work as a dentist you need Approbation, while an academic career runs through a doctorate (Dr. med. dent.) or an academic MSc programme.
#Working as a dentist: Approbation

To practise in Germany with a foreign dental qualification, you need Approbation.
For third-country diplomas such as Turkish ones, equivalence is checked first; if there are substantial differences, you take a Kenntnisprüfung based on the state-exam content. You can also apply for the Kenntnisprüfung directly.
Language: German at B2 level, plus in most cases a specialist language exam (Fachsprachprüfung) at C1. Example Berlin: a decision within 4 months of a complete file; the total duration is not officially fixed.
In the meantime, a Berufserlaubnis is possible: it is revocable and covers at most 2 years of dental practice in total.

#Specialist title (Fachzahnarzt)
Recognition of a specialist title is handled by the Land's dental chamber (Landeszahnärztekammer) and requires Approbation or a Berufserlaubnis first.
#Doctorate (Dr. med. dent.)
Each faculty's Promotionsordnung sets the rules. Example Heidelberg: foreign dental graduates can be admitted if the Dean, after consulting the ZAB, deems the foreign exam equivalent; Approbation is not listed as a requirement, but conditions may be imposed.
#Academic MSc programmes
Content, language and requirements vary by programme; continuing-education (weiterbildende) master's programmes charge fees. Check each programme's own page.

Question 14

What is the German language requirement for social sciences master's programs?

Accepted Answer

There is no single German language requirement for social sciences master's programs in Germany: each university and program decides which certificate and level it accepts. A blanket rule such as "social sciences always require C1" does not exist.
#German-taught programs

The required proof and level vary by program.
Commonly requested certificates are DSH or TestDaF; the program's application page states which result is enough.
The subject name alone (sociology, psychology, political science, etc.) does not fix the level; the program's own rules do.

#English-taught programs

The program sets the English proof (e.g. IELTS/TOEFL) and any German requirement.
There is no Germany-wide score.

#If you don't meet the requirement yet

Some universities offer conditional admission; the university's rules define the condition.
Once you meet the language requirement, a new application may be required.

#How to check

Read the "Sprachnachweis / language requirements" section on the program's official page.
If anything is unclear, ask the international office. The university makes the final decision.

Source: Conditional admission and language level guide

Question 15

Should you apply for a Master's in Germany in your 3rd year or after your 4th year?

Accepted Answer

The right time depends not on your year of study but on the target program's deadline and on whether it accepts applications before graduation. Germany has no single master's deadline for everyone; each university sets its own.
#Applying before graduation

Whether a current transcript or an expected-graduation certificate is accepted is up to the university; there is no general rule.
Look for a rule on this on the program page, or ask the international office.

#Plan backwards

First note the deadlines of your target programs.
Get your language certificate and required documents ready before that date; language requirements vary by program.
If the program uses uni-assist, processing usually takes 4–6 weeks, and uni-assist's deadline is the university's deadline.
A VPD is needed only if the university asks for one. It is issued for that specific university and is valid for one year from the date of issue. After receiving it, you still apply directly to the university.

#What to do in your 3rd year

Research programs and list subject fit, grade and language requirements and the documents needed.
Start language preparation early so your certificates are ready in your final year.

Question 16

Is German required for English-taught master's programmes in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Not always: each English-taught master's programme decides whether it requires German and at what level. There is no Germany-wide German requirement for English-taught programmes.
#What the programme sets

The English proof (e.g. IELTS/TOEFL) and the score it needs.
Whether German is required at all — and if so, which level and whether you must prove it at application or later.
Some programmes ask for no German, others set a specific level. Even two programmes in the same field can differ.

#Conditional admission
Some universities admit you on condition that you meet a language requirement later. What that condition involves follows the university's own rules.
#Is German still worth it?
Even if admission does not require it, German makes everyday life, dealing with authorities and working alongside your studies easier. That is your choice, not an admission requirement.
#How to check
Read the "Language requirements" section on the programme's official page and look it up in the DAAD admission database. If it is unclear, ask the university's international office in writing.

Question 17

Can I apply for a master's without waiting for my certificates?

Accepted Answer

At some universities, yes — but there is no Germany-wide rule; each university and programme decides. Whether you can apply before holding your degree certificate or language certificate depends entirely on the programme you choose.
#No degree certificate yet

The university decides whether it accepts a transcript or a certificate of expected graduation at the application stage. Check the programme's application page.
For master admission the university checks your bachelor's subject fit, grade, language proof and documents individually. There is no national GPA, NC or language threshold.

#No language certificate yet

The required proof and level vary: German-taught programmes often ask for DSH or TestDaF, English-taught ones for proof such as IELTS or TOEFL. There is no universal C1 or B2 rule.
If a programme offers conditional admission, it is tied to the condition the university sets, and that university's rules decide what you must submit and by when.

#What to do

Read each programme's requirements and deadline separately — there is no single deadline that applies to everyone.
If the programme uses uni-assist, the uni-assist deadline is the university's deadline.
When in doubt, ask the admissions office whether documents can be submitted later.

Question 19

Are there English-taught Master's programmes in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many German universities offer Master's programmes taught entirely in English, across a wide range of subjects.
What you usually need

Proof of English proficiency, typically a recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.
The subject-specific admission requirements of the programme (for example, a relevant Bachelor's degree).

Caveat: the required English level, the accepted certificates and any exemptions differ from programme to programme. A score that is enough for one university may not be enough for another.
The most reliable information is on the website of each university and programme. Check the admission requirements, the language requirements and the application deadline there before you apply.

Question 20

Can you finish a bachelor's degree in Germany faster than the standard duration?

Accepted Answer

While it's theoretically possible to complete a bachelor's program in Germany in less than the standard time, it's quite challenging in practice. The heavy course load and exam schedules in most programs don't really allow for it. Most bachelor's programs typically run for 3 to 3.5 years. To see if early completion is an option for you, it's best to check your department's curriculum plan (Studienordnung).

Question 21

How are undergraduate GPA, work experience, and ECTS differences evaluated for master's applications in Germany?

Accepted Answer

When you apply for master's programs in Germany, your undergraduate GPA (often referred to as VPD for preliminary documentation), work experience, and the ECTS credits from your bachelor's program all play a significant role. If you have a 180 ECTS bachelor's degree and are applying to programs that expect 210 ECTS, you might need to take additional courses. Relevant work experience, however, can definitely boost your application chances.

Question 22

Can you study math-intensive fields like Computer Science in Germany without strong high school math knowledge?

Accepted Answer

Based on what students often share, studying math-intensive fields like Computer Science in Germany without a solid foundation in high school mathematics is quite difficult. Most of these programs require advanced math skills. However, many universities do offer preparatory courses to help you refresh your high school math knowledge before classes officially begin.

Question 23

Can you extend your university studies in Germany, and how does that affect your visa?

Accepted Answer

Your bachelor's or master's degree studies in Germany, especially in STEM fields, might take longer than expected. International students can usually extend their student residence permits as long as they show regular academic progress. However, extensions aren't automatic, and you might need to provide proof of your academic standing. It's important to verify the specific time limits and conditions for your situation directly with the immigration office (Ausländerbehörde).

Question 24

Lisans eğitimimden farklı bir alanda yüksek lisans yapabilir miyim?

Accepted Answer

Question 25

Can I apply for a Computer Science Master's in Germany with a Bachelor's in a different field?

Accepted Answer

It is possible in some cases, but it is generally difficult. German universities expect Master's applicants in Computer Science to already have solid foundational knowledge in the subject, which is usually shown through the courses of your Bachelor's degree.
What can help

Some programmes accept applicants who can prove a certain number of additional credits in relevant subjects.
Some programmes also take relevant work experience into account.

Caveat: there is no uniform rule. Which subjects count, how many credits are needed and whether work experience is considered all differ from university to university and from programme to programme.
What to do

Read the admission requirements of each programme you are interested in carefully.
Compare them with the courses in your transcript.
If you are unsure whether your background is sufficient, ask the programme or the university's admissions office before applying.

Question 26

Do universities in Germany offer conditional admission for master's programs year-round?

Accepted Answer

Some universities in Germany might offer conditional admission for master's programs, not year-round, but during different application periods, typically for the winter and summer semesters. Conditional admission is usually granted if you have insufficient language skills, requiring you to meet the language proficiency requirements within a specific timeframe. It's crucial to check the websites of the universities you're interested in for the most current application deadlines and conditional admission policies.

Question 27

Can PhD students work a side job in Germany?

Accepted Answer

PhD students might be allowed to work a side job, depending on their specific visa and residence permit type. However, considering the demanding nature of PhD studies, a side job could negatively impact the time it takes to complete your thesis. It's crucial to confirm the exact work permit conditions and hourly limitations that apply to your situation.

Question 28

Can you pursue a master's degree in Germany without a related bachelor's degree?

Accepted Answer

Generally, admission to master's programs in Germany requires a bachelor's degree that is relevant to the field you're applying for, along with specific prerequisite courses. It's really important to carefully check the admission requirements on the university's specific program pages. In some cases, you might be able to apply by completing missing courses or by participating in bridge programs designed to cover those gaps.

Question 29

What is a "Zweitstudium" in Germany and what are the application requirements?

Accepted Answer

A Zweitstudium refers to pursuing a second university degree in Germany after you've already completed a bachelor's or master's degree. Applications for these programs often have specific quotas and special admission requirements. Your motivation letter and previous academic achievements can play a significant role. Since application processes and requirements vary widely from one university to another, you should always check the website of the specific program you're interested in.

Do application requirements (GPA, ECTS) for master's programs in Germany vary by program?

Accepted Answer

Yes, application requirements for master's programs in Germany, such as GPA and ECTS, can vary significantly from one university to another, and even between different programs within the same university. Based on student experiences, it's crucial to review each program's specific "Zulassungsbedingungen/-voraussetzungen" (admission requirements) document and ensure you meet all the listed criteria.

Question 31

Can I take longer than the standard period to complete my university studies in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it's absolutely possible and quite common to take longer than the standard study period (Regelstudienzeit) to complete your university education in Germany. As long as you're making reasonable progress in your studies, extending your student residence permit usually isn't an issue. However, the Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde) might ask for proof of progress, such as sufficient ECTS credits. If your studies extend, make sure to confirm the specific extension conditions with your local Ausländerbehörde.

Question 32

Can I get a bachelor's degree in welding engineering or a similar field in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Welding is typically offered as an Ausbildung (vocational training) in Germany, not usually as a direct university bachelor's program. If you're aiming for a bachelor's degree in a field like welding engineering, our community suggests you look into mechanical engineering or similar technical engineering programs. These programs often include courses related to welding technologies.

Question 33

Can I pursue a master's degree in a different field like psychology with an unrelated bachelor's degree (e.g., English Literature)?

Accepted Answer

It's generally tough to pursue a master's degree in an unrelated field like psychology if your bachelor's is in something like English Literature. Master's programs in Germany usually require you to have completed a specific number of ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits or particular course content from a related bachelor's program. A degree in English Literature, for example, might not directly qualify you for a psychology master's. You absolutely need to check the detailed admission requirements for the specific university and program you want to apply to.

Question 34

How can psychology graduates get accepted into a university in Germany?

Accepted Answer

If you're a psychology graduate, you can apply for master's degree programs in Germany. Typically, admission requires a strong undergraduate GPA, proof of language proficiency (either German or English, depending on the program), and sometimes additional entrance exams or interviews. It's crucial to check the specific university websites for their exact application process and required documents, as these can vary widely between institutions.

Question 35

Are there English-taught master's programs available in Germany?

Accepted Answer

Yes, absolutely! Many universities in Germany offer English-taught programs, especially at the master's level. These programs are quite popular among international students. Just remember that the specific application requirements will vary from one university to another, so always check the program details carefully.

Question 36

How do employers view private universities in Germany?

Accepted Answer

The way employers in Germany perceive private versus public universities isn't a one-size-fits-all situation. What really matters are the specific program, the university's accreditation, and its overall reputation. Some private universities, especially certain business schools, have a strong standing in their respective industries. However, institutions that aren't properly accredited can definitely cause issues for your future career. When you're making your choice, it's crucial to research the university's accreditation status and how well-recognized its programs are within your desired industry.

Question 37

What are your chances of admission to a Master's program in Germany with your GPA and work experience?

Accepted Answer

When applying to Master's programs in Germany, your undergraduate GPA and relevant work experience are both significant factors. Some programs might require graduates with a 180 ECTS Bachelor's degree to complete additional coursework. Having work experience in a related field can definitely boost your chances of admission. Since every program has its own unique admission criteria, you absolutely must check the specific requirements of the university before you apply.

Question 38

Can you pursue a master's degree in Germany without a related bachelor's degree?

Accepted Answer
