How to Open Free Family Insurance?
Registration with your GKV
- Your spouse / child is added to your insurance (familienversichert)
- You do not need to pay additional premiums — family insurance is completely free
- Spouse or child receives the same card number (Insurance card is personal)
Application Process
- Call GKV (TK, AOK, Barmer) customer service
- Request the Familienversicherung application form
- Submit the following documents:
- Marriage certificate (sworn translation + Apostille)
- Spouse/child passport + visa/residence permit
- Anmeldung of spouse/child (registered in Germany)
- Income statement (if spouse has no salary, "0 € statement")
If spouse is working (Werkstudent + income above 535 €) → Family insurance is cancelled, spouse must switch to their own insurance.
Paid Alternatives
Spouse's own GKV
- Spouse works + earns above 535 € → pays their own GKV fee
- Monthly premium: 131-180 € (if student tariff) or employee tariff (based on salary)
PKV for Spouse
- Over 30 + not working in Germany → PKV possible but expensive (200-300 €/month)
- PKV is sometimes required for family reunification visa
Private Insurance for Child
- Child insurance under PKV 50-150 €/month (depending on tariff)
Family Reunification Insurance Strategy
You live in Germany → You are in GKV
- Invite spouse/child (Familienzusammenführung visa)
- They come to Germany after the visa is obtained
- After Anmeldung → Apply for family insurance with your GKV
- Familienversicherung is opened within 1-2 weeks → free
If Spouse will work as a Werkstudent
- Below 535 € (Mini-Job) → family insurance remains, free
- Above 535 € → family insurance is cancelled, spouse gets their own insurance
Important Notes
- If spouse is working (Vollzeit, not Mini-Job): Spouse is automatically included in their own insurance
- Child is a Universität student (in Germany): Opens their own insurance (131 €/month)
- Divorce: Familienversicherung is cancelled, spouse switches to their own insurance
Family Member Without GKV in the Past
If spouse is coming from Turkey, visa insurance must be obtained first:
- Hanse Merkur Visa Protect (separate policy for spouse) → for visa
- After arriving in Germany, switch to family insurance (under your GKV)
- Cancel visa insurance (refund for unused months)
Living in a Family Dorm
Family insurance does not require sharing the same address but an economic connection is sought. If spouse lives in another city (e.g., you are a student in München, spouse works in Berlin) — family insurance is cancelled.
