What can I do about communication problems with officials at visa interviews?

A few practical steps that students report working well:

• Bring someone who speaks German. At most offices (Bürgeramt, Ausländerbehörde, Studentenwerk) you may bring a friend or an interpreter. Ask when you book the appointment; a few offices require that the companion is not a fellow applicant.
• Ask for things in writing. If a decision or a document list is unclear, ask for it by e-mail or on paper. Written instructions are easier to translate and to check later.
• Stay factual and keep records. Note the date, the office, the name or counter number and what was said. This matters if you need to escalate.
• Escalate if it does not get resolved. You can complain to the head of the office or file a formal complaint about an official's conduct (Dienstaufsichtsbeschwerde). A complaint concerns how you were treated, not the visa decision itself. The remonstration procedure against visa refusals was abolished on 1 July 2025 (Federal Foreign Office, checked 14.10.2026); if you disagree with a refusal, you can file a new application or take legal action as set out in the notice of legal remedies (Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung) in the refusal.

At visa interviews at the German missions in Turkey, questions are normally asked in Turkish, German or English; you may answer in the language you are most comfortable with unless the interview is explicitly testing your German.
