How many weeks does it take to get a visa appointment at the German consulate?

✓ Answered · 4 min read · How much · 154 views

Current status (checked 14.10.2026): In Türkiye, study and study-place-search visa applications are handled only through the Consular Services Portal (Auslandsportal): digital.diplo.de/studium (source). The official page does not say since when this rule applies; 14.10.2026 is only the date we checked it. The iDATA appointment steps below do not apply to these two visa types. For other national visas the missions work with iDATA and IOM-FAP (source).

As of 2026, German consulate visa appointment waiting times vary by consulate and by visa type.

Consulates in Turkey — Waiting Times

Student Visa (National D Visa)

Consulate Average waiting time
Consulate General Istanbul 8-14 weeks
Embassy Ankara 6-12 weeks
Consulate General Izmir 6-10 weeks
Consulate General Antalya 4-8 weeks
Consulate Trabzon 4-6 weeks

Schengen Visa (Tourist C visa)

  • At all consulates: 2-4 weeks (depending on the season)
  • Waiting times extend during summer months

Family Reunion Visa

  • 8-16 weeks (high)

Work Visa / Blue Card

  • 4-8 weeks

Peak Periods (Longer Waiting Times)

  • May-September — high demand for student visas during summer
  • October-November — last chance for Wintersemester
  • March-April — Sommersemester start

Faster Periods

  • December-February — early winter, fewer applications
  • Summer holiday (August-first half of September) — fewer applications at some consulates
  • Turkish national holidays — low demand

Appointment Booking Process

1. Application via IDATA

  • idata.com.tr → select "Germany"
  • Online pre-registration + iDATA service fee of €39.92 and/or €12 appointment booking fee (charged in Turkish lira; German missions in Türkiye, checked 14.10.2026)
  • Prepare documents

2. Appointment Assignment

  • IDATA will notify you of the appointment date via email
  • Appointments are scheduled 3-12 weeks later
  • IDATA chooses the location/time (limited options)

3. On the Appointment Day

  • Go to the IDATA office (in Turkey)
  • Submit documents
  • Biometric data collection
  • Documents are sent to the consulate via DHL

4. Consulate Assessment

  • Waiting time at the consulate: 4-12 weeks
  • Once a decision is made, IDATA is notified
  • IDATA will inform you via message/email

5. Document Delivery

  • If the visa is approved, your passport with visa will be ready at IDATA
  • Pick up from IDATA office or via courier
  • If rejected → rejection letter

Total Duration

Stage Duration

Start your visa application 6 months in advance — for Wintersemester (October), start in April.

Acceleration Strategies

Valid Reason (Urgent Reason)

  • DAAD scholarship acceptance letter — priority
  • Summer course start is soon — explain
  • University deadline — written proof

IDATA Premium Services

  • VIP service (additional 50-150 €) — faster appointment
  • Premium service — private office + acceleration
  • Is it effective? Debatable

Other Consulates

  • If your local consulate is busy → Trabzon, Antalya are faster
  • Change address + apply to a different consulate (legal)

Consulate-Specific Details

Istanbul

  • Busiest consulate (in Turkey)
  • Waiting time 8-14 weeks
  • IDATA Istanbul: Levent + Şirinevler
  • High backlog during summer months

Ankara

  • Less busy (than Istanbul)
  • Waiting time 6-12 weeks
  • IDATA Ankara: Çankaya

Izmir

  • Medium intensity
  • Waiting time 6-10 weeks
  • Only consulate in the Aegean region

Antalya / Trabzon

  • Fastest consulates
  • Waiting time 4-8 weeks
  • If your address is not Antalya/Trabzon → address change

Common Problems

Problem: No Appointments Available / Too Late

  • The online appointment system is updated daily
  • Constantly check IDATA (new appointments open up)
  • Call IDATA customer service (+90 850 233 53 21)

Problem: Visa Rejected

  • The consulate provides a written reason for rejection
  • The remonstration procedure (objection at the mission) was abolished on 1 July 2025 (Federal Foreign Office, checked 14.10.2026)
  • Your options: a new application that addresses the refusal reasons, or legal action as set out in the notice of legal remedies (Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung) in the refusal; the deadline and the competent court are stated there

Problem: Missing Documents

  • IDATA will inform you of missing documents during the appointment
  • You can complete missing documents within 7 business days
  • If documents are missing, the consulate does not automatically reject, it waits

Practical Advice

  • Start 6 months in advance — for documents + IDATA application for appointment
  • Apply by May — for Wintersemester (October)
  • Check the IDATA appointment system daily — new appointments open up
  • Plan B: Antalya/Trabzon consulate instead of Istanbul

Important Notes

  • At the beginning of 2026, the IDATA system underwent reform — the appointment system was re-adjusted in some cities
  • Consulate rejection rate is 5-10% (acceptance rate 90%+) — if documents are complete, it will be accepted
  • The visa becomes valid 3 months in advance (if you get your visa date in February, you can enter until October)
