What are the required documents for Anmeldung?
For your Anmeldung, 3 mandatory documents are sufficient. Some municipalities may request additional documents.
Mandatory Documents
1. Passport + Visa
- Valid passport (original, undamaged)
- Visa page (obtained before entering Germany)
- If the visa will be issued in Germany → entry stamp
2. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
-
Turkish: "Landlord confirmation document"
-
Must be signed by the landlord
-
Content:
- Landlord's name + address
- Declaration that they are providing you with accommodation
- Showing your address and move-in date
- Date + signature
-
The form can be downloaded from the Bürgeramt website or provided by the landlord in their own format
-
Dormitory administration can also sign (for Studierendenwerk)
-
Must be dated maximum 2 weeks prior to your Anmeldung
3. Anmeldeformular
- Turkish: "Address registration form"
- Download from the Bürgeramt website, fill it out in advance
- When filling out, in German:
- Familienname (Surname)
- Vornamen (First Name)
- Geburtsdatum (Date of birth)
- Geburtsort + Land (Place of birth + Country)
- Staatsangehörigkeit (Nationality)
- Eheliche Verhältnisse (Marital status)
- Religion (Religion — you can leave this blank)
- Wohnung (Address details)
- Tag des Einzugs (Move-in date)
Additional Documents Requested by Some Municipalities
Insurance (Sometimes)
- Bavaria + smaller cities sometimes request an insurance certificate
- Visa insurance (Hanse Merkur, Fintiba) → present as PDF
SteuerID (For those who have previously lived in Germany)
- If you have previously lived in Germany, your existing SteuerID will be requested
- If this is your first time, you won't have one, which is normal
Bank Account (Very Rarely)
- Some municipalities request proof of a bank account
- Most people doing their Anmeldung do not need this
Additional Documents for Family Members
With Spouse
- Marriage certificate (sworn translation + Apostille)
- Spouse's passport + visa
- Separate Anmeldeformular for spouse
With Child
- Child's birth certificate (sworn translation + Apostille)
- Child's passport (if applicable)
- Separate Anmeldeformular for child (with parent's signature)
Child Anmeldung Only (to Your Address)
- The child is added after you complete your Anmeldung
- Child's birth certificate + your Anmeldebescheinigung
If the Visa Will Be Issued in Germany
If You Entered Germany Without a Visa
- If you are an EU/Schengen visa-free citizen (not Turkish, but another nationality)
- Anmeldung is still done
- Visa application is then made at the Ausländerbehörde
Turkish Citizen + Visa from Germany
- Turkish citizens cannot enter without a visa (a Schengen visa is required)
- The visa must have been obtained in Turkey (student visa = D visa)
- Anmeldung is done in Germany, followed by the application for an Aufenthaltstitel
Document Verification (Echtheit-Prüfung)
- Is the passport original? Officer checks
- Is the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung authentic? The officer may call the landlord to verify
- Does the marriage certificate have a sworn translation + Apostille? Some branches reject it (out of scope)
Common Reasons for Rejection
- Wohnungsgeberbestätigung is old (more than 1 month old)
- Landlord is not registered (no equivalent to a land registry in Turkey)
- AirBnB or hostel address (temporary accommodation → not accepted)
- Passport validity is less than 3 months
- Translation is not sworn (private translator but without a seal)
Practical Advice
- Fill out the form in advance — you'll save time at your appointment
- Bring the original + 2 copies of all documents (the officer keeps a copy)
- Use a German form dictionary (Google Translate can help)
- If the officer asks questions, you are not required to answer in German — English is accepted
