How does the Anmeldung process work in Munich?

✓ Answered · 3 min read · How-to · 130 views

The Anmeldung process in München is smoother than in Berlin, but a waiting period of 4-8 weeks is still normal.

München KVR (Kreisverwaltungsreferat)

System

  • München's registration office is known as the KVR
  • Online appointment: muenchen.de/buerger → "Termin online"
  • KVR main office: Ruppertstraße 11 (central)
  • Additional branches: Marienplatz, Pasing, Bogenhausen, Sendling

Booking an Appointment

Online Appointment (Most Common)

  • muenchen.de/buerger → Anmeldung page
  • Appointment via online form
  • Waiting time: 4-8 weeks (normal for a big city)

Early Morning Refresh

  • The system opens new appointments every night between 00:00-04:00
  • Sunday night → Monday morning has the most openings
  • Automatic refresh every 1 minute

Walk-in (Limited)

Walk-ins in München are very limited

  • Some smaller branches may accept between 7-8 AM
  • The KVR Ruppertstraße main office does not accept walk-ins

Process

1. After Booking an Appointment

  • Email confirmation + appointment number
  • Download + fill out the Anmeldeformular in advance (from the KVR website)
  • Prepare documents

2. On the Appointment Day

  • Be at the office 15 minutes early (don't be late!)
  • Get a ticket at the KVR reception
  • Wait for your number in the waiting room (15-30 minutes)
  • Meeting with the official

3. Meeting with the Official

  • Hand over your passport + Wohnungsgeberbestätigung + form
  • The official checks the form
  • The Anmeldebescheinigung (registration certificate) is issued immediately
  • Your SteuerID arrives by post within 2-4 weeks

München Specific Documents

Standard Documents

  • Passport + visa
  • Wohnungsgeberbestätigung
  • Anmeldeformular (KVR form)

Bavarian Exception: Insurance

In Bavaria, some branches require an insurance certificate

  • Show your visa insurance (Hanse Merkur, Fintiba) as a PDF
  • Saying "I haven't done it yet" is accepted (most of the time)

KVR Branches

Main Branches

  • Ruppertstraße 11 (main center)
  • Pasing (Bahnhofsplatz)
  • Bogenhausen (Ottostraße)
  • Sendling (Implerstraße)

Which Branch to Choose?

  • Your local Bürgeramt (Bezirksamt) is prioritized
  • Pasing/Bogenhausen are less busy than the central branches
  • München center (Ruppertstraße) is the busiest, does not accept walk-ins

Common Problems (München)

Problem 1: No Turkish Support (Generally)

  • München KVR officials mostly speak German
  • Some branches have English-speaking officials
  • Turkish support: AOK Bayern Türkische Service (for insurance)

Problem 2: Strict Bavarian Control

  • KVR officials are more detail-oriented compared to Berlin
  • They double-check documents
  • Apostille + sworn translation are mandatory (stricter in Bavaria)

Problem 3: If You Miss Your Appointment

  • Missing 1 appointment = 3-4 weeks delay
  • KVR generally has no 15-minute late tolerance
  • Waiting another 4-8 weeks to get a new appointment

München Specific Tips

Urgent Appointment

  • Written urgent reason letter to the KVR — visa, job, Uni
  • Letter in German + supporting documents (e.g., Ausländerbehörde appointment letter)
  • Decision process 1-2 weeks — if urgent reason is accepted, an earlier appointment

University Assistance

  • TUM, LMU international offices provide Anmeldung support
  • Group Anmeldung appointments (for first-semester students)
  • International Welcome Service München → accompaniment for Anmeldung

Professional Service

  • "Termin-Service München" — private company, 80-150 € package
  • More expensive in Bavaria (more than Berlin)

After Anmeldung in München

  • Anmeldebescheinigung is issued immediately (written document)
  • SteuerID by post within 2-4 weeks (from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern) Next steps:
    • Bank account (with Anmeldebescheinigung)
    • Insurance application (AOK Bayern is recommended — local)
    • Completing university enrollment
    • Aufenthaltstitel application (Ausländerbehörde München)

Important Notes

  • Bavarian German is different (Bayerisch) — KVR officials speak standard German, but other people in the waiting room might speak Bayerisch
  • KVR is generally open Monday-Friday (8:00-12:00 and 14:00-18:00 in some branches)
  • No Saturday open branches generally
