Do you need your passport and visa together for Anmeldung?

✓ Answered · 3 min read · 121 views

Yes, a passport + visa are required together. For international students, Anmeldung cannot be done without a D visa (student visa) (generally).

Passport and Visa Requirements

Passport

  • Original passport (a copy is not enough)
  • Valid (at least 6 months remaining)
  • Undamaged (no torn pages, clear photo)
  • Signed (on the last page for Turkish passports)

Visa

  • D visa (National visa) — for stays of 90+ days in Germany
  • Valid (at the time of Anmeldung)
  • For the correct purpose (study, work, family reunion, etc.)

Anmeldung by Visa Type

Student Visa (§16b AufenthG)

  • Anmeldung is done — for studies, valid for 1-2 years
  • University acceptance letter is not required (the visa is already proof)

Language Course Visa (§16f AufenthG)

  • Anmeldung is done
  • Course contract may also be requested by some municipalities

University Application Visa (§17 AufenthG)

  • Anmeldung is done
  • Proof of university application (Anabin equivalence, etc.)

Job Seeker / Blue Card (§18b AufenthG)

  • Anmeldung is done
  • Employment contract may be checked

Family Reunion (§28-30 AufenthG)

  • Anmeldung is done
  • Information of spouse/parents/child

Schengen Visa (C visa) Status

Schengen Visa

  • Anmeldung cannot be done with a Schengen visa (Type C) — it only allows a stay of 90 days/180 days
  • If Anmeldung is not needed, Schengen is sufficient

International Student + Schengen

  • With a tourist Schengen, registration is not mandatory
  • For university enrollment or work → D visa (student/work) is required

If the Visa is to be Issued in Germany

EU Citizen (European Union)

  • Enters without a Schengen visa
  • Anmeldung is still mandatory — for EU citizens after 90 days
  • No visa required

Other Citizens

  • Arrive with a Schengen visa
  • Apply for a D visa at the Ausländerbehörde within 90 days
  • Anmeldung is done before or during the Ausländerbehörde application

Common Problems

Problem 1: Visa Expired

  • A valid visa is essential — Anmeldung is already required for visa extension
  • First, make an appointment for visa extension, then for Anmeldung

Problem 2: Passport Expiry Date is Near

  • Anmeldung with a passport that has 3 months remaining may not be accepted
  • Get a new passport in advance (in your home country or at the consulate)

Problem 3: Missing Visa Page

  • The visa page must be in the passport (as a sticker)
  • Sometimes a visa "additional page" is given → take that too

Problem 4: Family Member Without Visa

  • Spouse in your home country + waiting for a visa → only you do the Anmeldung
  • When the spouse's visa arrives, they do a separate Anmeldung

What to Do If You Don't Have a Visa?

Scenario: You Arrived from Your Home Country with a Schengen Visa

  • Stay in Germany for 90 days (Schengen)
  • You can stay without doing Anmeldung (for 90 days)
  • To stay longer than 90 days → apply for an Aufenthaltstitel (difficult without a D visa)
  • Returning to your home country and coming with the correct visa is usually necessary

Scenario: You Arrived with a Tourist Visa + Want to Enroll in a University

  • University enrollment requires a D visa (for studies)
  • Enrollment with a Schengen visa is not possible (difficult after 90 days)
  • Return to your home country and come with a student visa

Practical Advice

  • Before coming to Germany, get a D visa (at the consulate in your home country)
  • Visa information must be on the passport
  • Ensure your passport is valid for 6+ months
  • Check visa validity before your Anmeldung appointment

Important Notes

  • The Bürgeramt does not check visa details — it only checks its existence and validity period
  • The Ausländerbehörde will give you an appointment for visa extension after Anmeldung
  • If you don't have a visa → it is recommended to return to your home country + get the correct visa
