Is staying with a relative enough for Anmeldung, or do you need a rental contract?
You don't necessarily need an official rental contract for your Anmeldung (registration of residence) in Germany. However, the person providing you accommodation (your landlord or relative) must give you a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung (confirmation of accommodation provider). This document officially confirms that you live at that address, and it's valid even if you're staying with a relative.
