Short answer: how does the application work?

  • Applying: according to the official page, all applicants with a German or foreign school certificate use the online portal TUCaN, and the same deadlines apply. The official pages we reviewed do not mention uni-assist.
  • Master's: after the online application you must also post a printed cover sheet and copies of documents; the official page says: "Your application is NOT complete after Step 1!"
  • Applicants without enough German: to take TU Darmstadt's DSH you need conditional admission from TU Darmstadt and a B2-level certificate (e.g. DSH-1, TestDaF TDN 14/15, Goethe/ÖSD/telc B2, UNIcert II) by the application deadline at the latest. DSH preparation courses run at the Studienkolleg Darmstadt. The page does not detail how long the conditional admission lasts or whether the degree place is reserved; confirm before you apply.

Routes at other universities are compared in our conditional admission overview.

Bachelor's and Master's requirements

  • Bachelor's: applicants whose school certificate does not give direct entry can take the two-semester T-course or G-course at the Studienkolleg Darmstadt.
  • Master's: admission requires a Bachelor's in the same programme at TU Darmstadt or an equivalent degree; details depend on the programme. For example, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning requires at least 60 ECTS in matching core courses or an on-campus entrance exam.
  • The official pages give different deadlines for submitting the Bachelor's certificate after Master's admission; check the exact date in your admission letter.

For general steps, see our guide to a Master's in Germany.

Language certificates: which and when?

  • German-taught programmes (Bachelor's and Master's): DSH-2 or an equivalent: TestDaF TDN 16, DSD II, Goethe C1/C2, ÖSD C1/C2, telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule, UNIcert III, Feststellungsprüfung. The language certificate is listed among the application documents.
  • English-taught Master's programmes: the default requirement is IELTS 7.0, TOEFL iBT 95, PTE 76, UNIcert III or confirmation that your previous degree was taught in English. Some programmes require a lower (e.g. Mechanics) or different level (e.g. English C1 for AI & ML).

Our guide to German language certificates compares the exams.

TU Darmstadt: A Pioneer in German Engineering

Technische Universität Darmstadt is one of the key institutions that has shaped Germany's development in science and engineering. Since its founding in 1877, it has gained global recognition, especially for its advancements in electrical engineering. The university revolutionized the field by establishing the world's first chair in electrical engineering in 1882 and launching the first faculty and degree program in electrical engineering in 1883. This pioneering spirit also led to the introduction of many new scientific disciplines in Germany, such as computer science, artificial intelligence, mechatronics, and business informatics.

Its designation as Germany's first fully autonomous university in 2004 demonstrates TU Darmstadt's innovative management approach and academic freedom. This autonomy allows the university to manage its resources more flexibly, adapt academic programs faster, and act more independently in research projects. With approximately 25,000 students and 5,000 employees, TU Darmstadt is one of Germany's mid-sized universities and an active member of the TU9 alliance, which brings together Germany's most respected technical universities. This membership strengthens the university's research intensity, international network, and strong ties with industry.

Education and Research Focus Areas in Darmstadt

Student Life and Culture

Technische Universität Darmstadt isn't just known for its academic achievements; it also boasts a vibrant student life. Darmstadt offers students both a calm city environment and a variety of social and cultural activities. The university campus, with its modern buildings and green spaces, provides a pleasant environment for learning and socializing. Student clubs and societies are active in a wide range of areas, from sports and cultural events to hobby groups and international student organizations. These clubs offer great opportunities to make new friends, practice German, and adapt to student culture in Germany.

A significant part of student life in Darmstadt, especially a frequent topic among international students, is finding accommodation. While student dorms (Studierendenwerk) in the city often offer affordable options, availability can be limited. For this reason, students often prefer living in shared apartments (WG - Wohngemeinschaft). Cafes, bars, and student venues near the city center are popular spots for socializing between classes or in the evenings. Darmstadt's location also offers easy access to larger cities like Frankfurt and surrounding natural beauty, making it ideal for weekend getaways.

  • Vibrant cafe and bar culture
  • Extensive social opportunities due to proximity to Frankfurt
  • Free transportation within the Hessen state with your Semesterticket
  • International student-friendly environment
