Frequently Asked Questions
Should I pursue a Master's or an Ausbildung in Germany? What do you recommend, especially considering financial situation and language proficiency? ▼
This question often troubles many Turkish students considering study in Germany. Both a Master's and an Ausbildung (vocational training) have their own advantages and disadvantages. A Master's offers academic depth and international career opportunities, but the German language requirement (usually C1, an advanced proficiency level) and financial obligations (the need to work while studying) can be challenging. An Ausbildung, on the other hand, allows you to enter the workforce faster, provides practical learning, and often comes with a salary, offering financial independence. However, the career path and international recognition of an Ausbildung might differ from a Master's. When deciding, it's important to consider your language proficiency, long-term career goals, and financial situation. Schools like GISMA can help you overcome the language barrier by offering English-taught programs.
I applied for a 41f visa but haven't heard back for over a month. Is this normal? ▼
German visa processes can take longer than expected, especially during peak seasons or at certain consulates. While a processing time of about one month is often stated for 41f visas (for language courses or university preparation), this period can frequently extend. Due to the high volume at foreign residents' offices (Ausländerbehörde) and consulates, especially in busy cities like Berlin, you might experience waits of 2-3 months or even longer. You can track your application status using Idata or the relevant consulate's online tracking system, but you'll need to be patient. The numerous messages about "visa appointments" on our forums also highlight how current an issue this is.
I'm staying in Berlin, but if I register my residence (Anmeldung) in Brandenburg, will there be a problem? ▼
In Germany, residence registration (Anmeldung) is a legal requirement that must be done in the city where you actually live. If you live in Berlin and attend a language course, you must register your residence (Anmeldung) in Berlin. If you register in Brandenburg, you could face problems later with official procedures like visa extensions, opening a bank account, or health insurance due to address discrepancies. It's crucial that your legal residence address matches your actual residence address.
Can I travel to Turkey and back with a Fiktionsbescheinigung while my visa extension application is pending? ▼
A Fiktionsbescheinigung (temporary residence permit document) grants you legal residency in Germany while your visa extension application is pending. However, your right to exit and re-enter the Schengen Area with this document depends on its type (§ 81 Abs. 3 AufenthG or § 81 Abs. 4 AufenthG). If your document does not state "Valid as a passport" or "Permits travel outside the Schengen Area," leaving Germany could be risky, and you might face problems re-entering the country. It's critically important to get the most accurate information and permission from the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Office) where you submitted your application. Generally, it's not recommended to leave the country while awaiting a visa extension decision.
How can I get an appointment at the Berlin Ausländerbehörde, and is it true that they are very busy? ▼
The Berlin Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Office) is known for being busy, and getting an appointment can be challenging. Appointments are usually made online via their official website. You should try to find a suitable date and time by selecting the relevant transaction type (e.g., "Verlängerung des Aufenthaltstitels für Studium" - extension of residence permit for study purposes). There might be a special request form or email address for urgent cases, but these channels may not provide quick responses due to the high volume. Reaching them directly by phone is usually difficult. If you can't find an appointment, sending an email detailing your situation and urgency, or mailing your documents (within the application period), is an option to protect your legal right to stay.
Don't forget to visit the official website to explore educational opportunities at GISMA and learn more about student life in Berlin. We're happy to help you on your study in Germany journey!
