Frequently Asked Questions

Which courier company should I use to send documents to Berlin? ▼

You can use international courier companies like PTT Kargo (APS), DHL, FedEx, or UPS to send documents to Berlin. These companies are generally preferred for their reliability and tracking options. You can evaluate different service options based on the urgency of your shipment.

Is it possible to come to Germany with zero German, start an English master's program, and work while studying? Is a Master's or an Ausbildung more advantageous? ▼

It is possible to come to Germany with zero German, start an English master's program, and learn German, but this process can be intense and challenging. Working while studying is common for students to support themselves, but legal working hours are limited (up to 140 working days a year; a day of up to 4 hours counts as half a day). The question of Master's versus Ausbildung (vocational training) depends entirely on your personal goals and career expectations. A Master's offers academic depth and international career opportunities, while an Ausbildung provides faster entry into the workforce and practical skill acquisition. If your English proficiency has dulled while learning German, English master's programs can be a good starting point, but German is essential for finding a job and integrating into Germany. Having to work while studying can make German master's programs more daunting, as the intensity of courses and the language barrier can create additional stress. Both options have advantages and disadvantages; you can make the most suitable decision for you by conducting detailed research and seeking advice.

Can I change my language course city after my visa is issued (from Heidelberg to Berlin)? ▼

In Germany, changing your language course city after your visa is issued usually requires you to contact the Foreigners' Office (Ausländerbehörde). Your visa might have been issued for a specific city or state. You may need to apply with a petition explaining your situation to the Foreigners' Office in your new city and get their approval. This situation could cause problems, so it's important to contact the relevant authorities beforehand to get information.

How long does it take for a 41f visa application to be processed? Are phones allowed in the iData office? ▼

The processing time for 41f visa (student visa) applications can vary depending on seasonal demand and the consulate's workload. Generally, a period of 4 to 12 weeks is expected, but in some cases, this duration may extend. Whether phones are allowed during interviews at the iData office can vary from office to office, but generally, for security reasons, electronic devices are not permitted in the interview area or are required to be left in custody. For the most up-to-date information, it is recommended to check iData's official website or call the office where you will be applying.

I'm struggling to find a house or dorm for a 1-year preparatory period in Berlin; what approach should I take? ▼

Finding affordable housing or dorms in Berlin, especially for a preparatory period of one year, can be challenging. Applying early is crucial. Student dorms (Studentenwerk), private dorms (e.g., The FIZZ, Urban Nation), or shared student apartments (WG - Wohngemeinschaft) are the most common options. For your WG search, you should actively use sites like WG-Gesucht.de and Immobilienscout24. You can also follow listings or ask for help by joining Facebook groups for Turkish students in Berlin or accommodation groups. Arranging temporary accommodation (hostel, Airbnb) and continuing your search once you arrive in Berlin can also be an option.

Can I reuse my Uni-Assist profile created 2 years ago, or should I open a new one? ▼

Your Uni-Assist profile typically remains active for a certain period (e.g., 2 years). If your profile is still active and your information is up-to-date, you can use the same profile for new applications. However, if a long time has passed or there have been significant changes to your information (e.g., a new diploma), it is recommended to update your profile or check the current terms of use on the Uni-Assist website. If you're unsure, you can contact Uni-Assist directly for the most accurate information.
