About the Program

The Master's program in Song Accompaniment/Accompaniment (M.Mus.) focuses on the close collaboration between piano and voice at the highest musical, linguistic, and interpretative level. Unlike many other programs, at JGU students learn not only song design but also combine it specifically with scenic accompaniment. In the area of song accompaniment, students work intensively with works from different periods and languages, focusing on sound design, expression, and text comprehension. Students develop a sense for stylistic differences and deepen their expressive power on the instrument while strengthening their communication skills. The program includes practical experiences, insights into various professional fields, and individual support for artistic development. The curriculum includes song accompaniment on the piano, piano reduction playing for opera and oratorio, as well as in-depth work on song design and musical interpretation. Students also study score and figured bass playing and apply their knowledge in various practical modules, including internships in vocal teaching, observations in accompaniment, and the design of recitatives on the harpsichord.
