About the Program

This Master's program provides students with the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to express themselves artistically in the field of improvisation, to independently execute extensive improvisational projects, and to apply and convey their musical abilities in professionally relevant situations. Upon successful completion, students can develop their own music-theoretical and music-historical considerations in the field of improvisation and present their understanding of 'impromptu playing' in writing. With their final thesis, students demonstrate the competence to reflect on their improvised concert program from interpretive aesthetic, historical, or analytical perspectives. The course content includes individual instruction on the chosen keyboard instrument (piano or organ), work reflection, musicology, group improvisation, artistic basso continuo playing, jazz improvisation, and composition. The program is directed by Prof. Dr. Jörg Abbing (Piano Improvisation) and Prof. Vincent Dubois (Organ Literature/Organ Improvisation).
