Memory Culture and Artistic Memory Practice

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The course explores memory as a competence for repetition and variation of experiences and thoughts, a capability for representation and implementation of knowledge and skills. It examines how artificial memory media support or replace natural memory to preserve experiences and acquired knowledge. The lecture presents historically variant memory media in mutual dependence on influential memory discourses from different epochs. Scientific reflections are consistently connected with the thematization of memory media in the arts. The considerations thus take place in the field of tension between collective forms of cultural memory and individual forms of appropriation and renewal of memory contents. Literature basis: Petra Maria Meyer, Memory Culture and Artistic Memory Practice. Kiel Lectures on MemoryMediaMetaphors in Historical Change, Kiel 2016.
