MA Spiel und Objekt Experimental PlayPlay and Object Experimental Play

Master of Arts (M.A.)

About the Program

The MA Spiel und Objekt / Experimental Play offers time and space to develop artistic, technological, social, and material skills for new playful formats in theater and beyond. Play challenges the imagination by enabling open, self-determined experiences outside extractive systems. It can connect us with the complexity of the world - with the people, materialities, and ecosystems that surround us. Experimental play takes place in a consciously designed political framework of embodied experience, exchange, criticism, and reflection. The program provides a small group of students with time and space to develop art, craft, and diverse technological, material, and social skills. In a two-year program of workshops, seminars, and continuous mentoring, students acquire core competencies such as process-oriented artistic project development, critical play and interaction literacy, handling digital technologies, new and old media and materialities, strategies for collaborative work, and practical survival skills in the cultural sector. Founded in 2018 by Prof. Friedrich Kirschner, the program has been led by Prof. Hannah Perner-Wilson and Prof. Sebastian Quack since 2025.
