About the Program

The field of Art History researches the origin, character, function, and impact of artworks from various areas of Fine Arts: architecture, sculpture, painting, graphics, and applied arts, as well as design, photography, and audiovisual media. The Master's program in Art History provides comprehensive knowledge in the field of history and theory of Fine Arts, as well as methodological competence in dealing with different epochs and genres of art and their specific research problems. Research and teaching represent a broad spectrum of art historical research approaches, including political iconography, material iconography, reception aesthetics, and history of science. The study includes the material and ideal prerequisites of art, artistic materials and techniques, the history of artist education, art theory, art criticism, and aesthetics. The program particularly aims to develop the ability for independent and critical scientific work, for the transfer of methods and knowledge, and for the application of scientific theories, methods, and knowledge.
