Kirchenmusik B -Church Music B

Bachelor of Music (B.Mus.)

About the Program

The Bachelor of Music in Church Music B program is designed for students with a strong and broad musical practical and theoretical background who aim to become church musicians. The core of the study consists of two main subject module strands: keyboard-specific content (1st main subject) and conducting and vocal content (2nd main subject). Church music accompanying modules teach liturgically relevant content. From the fifth semester, students choose a profile. Graduates are qualified for positions as church musicians (B) and for admission to further master's studies such as Church Music (A) or Organ. Three specialized profiles are offered: 'Popular Music' (focusing on pop singing, pop choir direction, and popular piano playing), 'Historical Keyboard Instruments' (deepening knowledge and skills in harpsichord and clavichord playing and ensemble playing), and 'Improvisation, Composition, New Media' (offering project work to develop in the process of creating music and finding personal forms of expression and performance). The program benefits from excellent connections with Lübeck's major downtown churches, providing access to instruments from Gothic to modern times, including the world-famous Stellwagen organ at St. Jacobi Church, the university's own Italian organ in the cathedral, and the Kuhn organ in the provost church. Regular excursions to historical organs in Germany and abroad and master classes with renowned artists take place each semester.
