About the Program

The Historical Musicology program aims to enable students to perceive music as an aesthetic object and to understand and analyze it in its historical context from late antiquity to the present, as well as in connection with other arts. This includes comprehensive knowledge of musical works, familiarity with writings on music theory and aesthetics, and awareness of the changing functions of music in social contexts. Students learn various music-historical methods such as source criticism, style criticism, analysis, and hermeneutics. The program provides qualifications for both professional practice and continuation of studies in a Master's program. Career prospects include work in conservatories, opera houses, theaters, music publishers, record companies, music editorial departments in press, radio and television, cultural management, museums and archives, youth and adult education institutions, as well as schools and universities.
