About the Program

The Master's program in Film Science focuses on critical engagement with both contemporary and historical forms of international film and media culture. Students examine various film genres (feature films, documentaries, animation, experimental and utility films) and reception venues (cinema, television, museums, and digital network culture). The program emphasizes an interdisciplinary cultural studies approach to historical and theoretical perspectives on film and international moving image cultures, teaching students to develop their own scientific research questions. The program has close cooperation with film and media professionals, curators, and workers in archive, festival, and art contexts, providing extensive practical insights. Students learn to articulate complex historical and theoretical arguments about film and media and prepare for work in international archives, festivals, and museums. Current focus areas include queer, trans* and feminist perspectives, as well as anti-racist and decolonial approaches.
