About the Program

The Film Music Master program is designed for young musicians with good composing skills and the ability to work in different styles. Students from various musical backgrounds (Classical, Pop, Jazz, etc.) are welcome to apply. The program offers personalized instruction, lectures, small-sized courses, and interdisciplinary projects allowing for collaboration with other programs. Students gain theoretical and dramaturgical knowledge, improve their composition and music production skills, discuss media theory issues, and develop their own artistic approach. The university provides technical equipment and facilities including recording studios, sequencing workstations for pre-production, and grand pianos. The curriculum aims to develop an individual musical style, professional expertise in dramaturgical and stylistic techniques essential to film music, an understanding of film as an art form, and technological skills for music production. The program includes modules such as Use and Composition of Film Music, Composition, Orchestration, Sound Design and Music Production, Media Theory, Legal and Entrepreneurial Module, Project Module (Scoring for Film Projects), and a Graduation Module (Master's Thesis). Students benefit from collaborations with the German Film Orchestra Babelsberg and work closely with students from other programs like Directing, Sound, and Editing. Graduates are qualified to work as freelance composers for film and media, as well as in advertising, theater, and audio plays. They can also pursue careers as music producers, music supervisors, television music journalists, or orchestrators.
