EDITING BA

Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)

About the Program

Film Editing examines the given material for what is of interest or value to be shown or told. It selects and omits; it determines the arrangement of the material and the duration of what is presented. In the editing room, the question is how to interpret the audio-visual material and how to articulate it. The Editing B.F.A. program of Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF provides students with artistic and practical skills as well as with theoretical and systematic knowledge. The goal is to deal with editing methods without relying on cinematic conventions and to critically reflect upon them. The B.F.A. degree program offers a reasonable balance between the independent exploration of artistic editing strategies and interdisciplinary teamwork. During the course of their studies, students learn how to independently work on artistic projects and develop teamwork skills. Career Opportunities: The successful completion of the B.F.A. program allows students to work in the field of artistic editing for all types of moving image media. The primary goal is to enable graduates to work as editors – a profession that today offers various opportunities to employ dramatic, creative, technological, and artistic skills to develop an individual approach. The curriculum comprises artistic and academic subjects taught in both mandatory and elective courses. Students explore non-normative, experimental artistic editing strategies and learn to present them academically and incorporate them into team processes. The program includes modules such as Introductory Courses, Feature/Documentary Film Editing, Digital Editing, Editing and Perception, Editing Exercise, Film Workshop, Interdisciplinary Projects, Media Workshop, Occupational Profile and Public Image, Electives, Editing Evaluation, Artistic Graduation Project, and Bachelor's Thesis. For their graduation, students create a portfolio of artistic works and theoretically reflect on an editing-related issue in their thesis.
