Director musical theater

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)

About the Program

The Musical Theater Directing course teaches both music theory and practical theater aspects. In the foundation course (1st to 3rd semester), technical skills such as directing, scenic handling of music, space, light and costume are learned in directing classes and in accompanying courses. Each of the three semesters focuses on a specific stylistic period (early music, classical repertoire opera and contemporary music theater), which students deal with in both practical and theoretical subjects. In the main course (4th-6th semester), students learn to work in different scenic formats (site-specific theater, theater for young audiences, various other staging techniques). The aim is to take into account the great media complexity and diversity of the genre of musical theater. Three directing projects, the demands of which are constantly increasing, run through the course. A special feature of the Theater Academy is the interlinked training with the courses in directing, acting, singing, drama and dramaturgy. Collaboration with students from the composition, conducting and instrumental classes as well as the Master's degree course in Multimedia Composition enriches the practical research opportunities. In close cooperation with the stage design class at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst (HfBK), the scenography course at the Hochschule Hannover (HsH) and the costume class at the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaft (HAW), artistic teams are formed that often work together successfully beyond the course.
