The concept of drawing underwent significant change in the last century. Art movements like Surrealism and Dada initiated intensive experimentation with unusual drawing materials and surfaces. This challenged the traditionally subordinate role of drawing as merely a study or sketch, suggesting the possibility of elevating this medium to the same status as established art forms like painting. This development continued with Concept Art and Minimal Art. With the emergence of New Media from the early 1960s to the present, drawing has found expression in these new media contexts, also documenting diverse drawing expressions. Various drawing materials are used, and increasingly, real space (including landscape as space) and even virtual space replace the paper sheet.
