About the Program

The master's program Creative Technologies combines audiovisual media technologies and software development studies with an artistic-creative exploration of novel forms of expression in film, design, and digital media art. Creative-artistic computer scientists as well as technically oriented designers and artists come together to experiment with an interdisciplinary approach. Focus areas include graphics, sound, visual effects, traditional production processes, and novel forms of storytelling in XR (Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality), cross-media, and interactive. The program covers Creative Coding & Software Development, Audio & Graphics, Media Technologies, Music Technologies, Interaction, Physical Computing, Programming Interfaces & Technical Direction, Film Production Processes, VFX, Virtual Production, Academic and Artistic Research, and Film, Storytelling, Design, and Digital Media Art.

The program follows a modular structure over 4 semesters. In the first year, there is a structured program with lecture modules and exercises, along with project modules including orientation projects and practical workshops. The second year is more openly structured with project modules in the third term, and the fourth term dedicated to completing the master thesis. Students choose an individual specialization from Creative Technologies topics with weekly one-to-one professor support. Core competencies include design and application of modern audio-visual media technologies, software development, theoretical backgrounds for audio & graphics, research methodologies, and understanding of current state of the art in media computer science, digital media art, and film production.
