About the Program

The History of Art master's program promotes knowledge and skills in research, for scientifically supporting measures to preserve and convey the wealth of cultural traditions. Building on a broad range of discipline-specific knowledge, students learn to apply scientific methods and knowledge to complex subject matter and the framework conditions of the arts. The program includes a high proportion of seminars with original works, reinforcing monumental knowledge (art techniques, stylistic history, earlier and present forms of presentation). Beyond the complexity of the individual discipline, students receive interdisciplinary instruction on problem solving. Major topics include 'Systematics' module to promote scientific initiative and early participation in research, 'Case studies' addressing topics from the entire spectrum of art history, and 'Field studies' including a major excursion and a project seminar. The program offers room to freely choose modules from other programs for individualized major topics. Career opportunities include museums, historical monuments, building research, image archives, art trading, art consulting, cultural management, adult education, tourism industry, print media, and audio-visual media. The master's program is also the foundation for a doctorate in Art History.
