During the Ausbildung (vocational training) to become a business economist, one acquires knowledge in areas such as: Business Administration: e.g., general business administration, corporate accounting, external/internal accounting, investment and financing, marketing. Economics: e.g., markets, pricing and competition, macroeconomics, government activities and overall economic development, international economic relations. Law: e.g., civil law, commercial and corporate law, labor law, public law. Business Administration Methods: e.g., mathematical methods and statistics in economics, foreign languages. For the practical part of the Ausbildung (vocational training), future business economists receive an Ausbildungsvergütung (training allowance) from companies. No training allowance is paid for the school-based training to become a Business Economist (Betriebswirt/in (VWA)) at Administrative and Business Academies.

The 3-year Ausbildung (vocational training) is carried out at Administrative and Business Academies, in commercial enterprises, and partly in Berufsschulen (vocational schools). In addition, there is the possibility to complete further training (Weiterbildung) as a Business Economist (Betriebswirt/in).

Business Economist (VWA). Generally, one also acquires a qualification in a recognized Ausbildung (vocational training) occupation, e.g.: Industrial Clerk (Industriekaufmann/Industriekauffrau), Office Management Clerk (Kaufmann/Kauffrau für Büromanagement), Retail Clerk (Kaufmann/Kauffrau im Einzelhandel).

After completing this Ausbildung (vocational training), Betriebswirte and Betriebswirtinnen (business administrators) can work in companies across almost all economic sectors. You can keep your specialist knowledge current, up-to-date, and expand it through Anpassungsweiterbildung (adaptive continuing education). The range of topics covers everything from purchasing to human resources. With a Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (university entrance qualification), you can pursue a Studium (university degree) and, for example, obtain a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. It is also possible to become self-employed, for instance, in customer and business consulting on personnel, financing, or investment matters, or as an independent Handelsvertreter/in (commercial agent).
