During the theoretical training phases, you should attend lectures, participate in practical exercises such as using communication and information technology devices in the field of telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance, and work independently by preparing for and reviewing lectures, researching in libraries, and preparing performance assessments. You are expected to adhere to given deadlines for presentations and project work. During the practical training phases, you will participate in practical work under guidance, for example, recording signals, evaluating them with technical means and methods, and assessing the information obtained. Mobility may be required for assignments in various departments of the Bundesnachrichtendienst or the Bundeswehr. It is important to develop problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

The monthly gross basic salary for applicants is 1,744 Euros. This is determined by the Bundesbesoldungsgesetz (BBesG). In addition to the basic salary, applicant remuneration includes capital-forming benefits, and potentially family allowances and other allowances, remunerations, and surcharges.

An Ausbildung (vocational training) is possible with degrees in fields such as Electrical Engineering (undergraduate), Information and Communication Technology (undergraduate), Computer Science (undergraduate), Mathematics (undergraduate), Interpreting (undergraduate), and Translation (undergraduate).

In-depth knowledge in the following areas is a good prerequisite for a successful preparatory service: Technology (e.g., for handling communication technology equipment) and Management/Organization (e.g., to efficiently organize cooperation between civilian and military departments).

The following alternative is available for the profession of civil servant in the higher technical service of federal telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance: In the area of protection and security, a civil servant in the federal military administration (higher technical service). The commonality is performing technical inspection and monitoring tasks for the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces).

The Ausbildung (vocational training) in the higher technical service of federal telecommunications and electronic reconnaissance is conducted as a preparatory service. It lasts 1.5 years and is regulated by federal ordinances. The Ausbildung concludes with a career examination. Typically, at least a Bachelorstudium (bachelor's degree) is required.

The prerequisite is generally a successfully completed Bachelorstudium (bachelor's degree) or an equivalent recognized university degree in electrical engineering, information and communication technology, computer science, mathematics, or a comparable field of study.
