What is the minimum duration in months required for language course registration?
For a language course visa (§16f), registration must be for a minimum of 6 months.
Requirements
- Course duration: 6-12 months (cannot be longer than 12 months)
- Intensity: At least 18 hours per week of intensive course
- Format: In-person classroom (online is mostly not accepted)
- Institution: Officially accredited language school (DSV, Goethe, etc.)
Will a 3-Month Course Be Rejected?
The consulate heavily scrutinizes course visas. A national visa will not be issued for a 3-month course — instead, a short-term Schengen visa (Sprachferien tourist visa) is required, but approval for that is also difficult with a Turkish passport.
"First 3 months, then extension" Strategy
Most international students think, "I'll do 3 months, then extend in DE." This does not work:
- The consulate makes its decision based on the initial duration
- To extend in DE, you need to show a valid reason to the Ausländerbehörde
- There is a risk of deportation if rejected
Practical Plan
If your goal is to study for a master's/bachelor's degree, a university/Studienkolleg visa (§16b) is a more reliable path than a language course visa. With a §16b visa, the course duration is flexible, and the main purpose is academic education.
