Is a university admission letter sufficient for a visa application?
Short answer: No, it's not enough on its own. The admission letter (Zulassung) is at the top of the list of mandatory documents, but other documents are also required.
Admission Letter + These Are Essential
| Document | Description |
|---|---|
| Admission letter | From a Universität or Studienkolleg |
| Sperrkonto | 2026: 11,904 €/year |
| Health insurance | German statutory insurance or travel insurance with min 30K € coverage |
| Language certificate | Mandatory for most programs (TestDaF/DSH/IELTS) |
| High school + bachelor's diploma | Apostilled + sworn translation |
| Transcript | Apostilled + sworn translation |
| Motivation letter | Explain why you are applying to the program |
| Biometric photo | Taken within the last 6 months |
| Passport | Validity period must be 3 months+ beyond visa expiry |
Conditional Admission (Bedingte Zulassung) Status
If your language proficiency is not yet complete, you can receive a conditional admission letter. In this case, a visa will be issued for the duration of language course + Studienkolleg or direct program preparation in Germany. Conditional admission is also evaluated under §16b, separate from a language course visa.
Practical Advice
Gather all documents in 2 copies — one original/apostilled, one for the consulate. If you apply with missing documents, your application will not be accepted at the appointment.
