Is a language certificate mandatory for a national visa application?
In most cases, yes, but which certificate is required depends on the purpose of your application.
Language Requirement by Scenario
| Application type | Required certificate |
|---|---|
| German-taught Bachelor's program | TestDaF (4+ in each section), DSH-2, telc C1 Hochschule, or Goethe C2 |
| German-taught Master's program | TestDaF 4, DSH-2, or B2 depending on the program (some social sciences) |
| English-taught Master's | IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL iBT 90+ and additionally A1-B1 German in some cases |
| Studienkolleg visa | B1 minimum (Goethe/Telc/ÖSD), some Bundesländer require B2 |
| Language course visa (§16f) | A1 is sufficient (you will be taking a course) |
| Uni application visa (§17) | Generally B1-B2 required — proof that you are ready for the program |
Important Rules
- The certificate must have been obtained within the last 2 years (Goethe is valid for life, but the consulate generally prefers fresh certificates)
- TestDaF + DSH are the two most widely accepted exams in Germany
- IELTS Academic is mandatory (General Training is not accepted)
If You Have Conditional Admission
If the Universität has granted conditional admission (Zulassung unter Vorbehalt), the admission letter will state "the student must achieve X level after arrival." In this case, the certificate you show for your visa application might be insufficient for program entry, but the visa will be granted — you will complete the missing requirement in DE.
