How to apply for a language course visa?

✓ Answered · 2 min read · How-to · 147 views

The language course visa (§16f) is issued for participating in an intensive German course (18+ hours per week) in Germany. It is not sufficient for studying at a Universität — it only recognizes the purpose of learning a language.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an intensive course for at least 6 months, 18+ hours per week
  • Generally A1 or A2 level is sufficient (you will be taking a course anyway)
  • Proof of funds — the German missions in Türkiye require at least €1,091 per month for a language course that does not prepare for university; a Sperrkonto or a Verpflichtungserklärung issued in Germany are equal options (Merkblatt 44F, checked 15.10.2026)
  • Health insurance (for the duration of the course)
  • Receipt confirming payment of the course fees

Process

  1. Enroll in a certified language school for 6+ months (including payment)
  2. Arrange proof of funds: a Sperrkonto or a Verpflichtungserklärung
  3. Arrange insurance
  4. Book an IDATA appointment
  5. Apply

Important Risks

The consulate has recently tightened the language course visa requirements. Your intention must genuinely be to learn the language; the intention of "a shortcut to becoming a uni student" is being detected — especially those who say "I have applied to a Universität, I will take a course until then" may be rejected.

Recommended alternative: If your goal is a master's/bachelor's degree, obtain direct Universität admission and apply with §16b. Studienkolleg or a 1-semester in-house German course at the Universität is a safer path, depending on your certificate deficiencies.
