How long is a German student visa valid?
When initially issued, your German student visa is valid for a maximum of 1 year, but once you arrive in Germany, it will be converted into a residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel).
Stages
Stage 1: Type D National Visa (Consulate)
- Duration: 3 months - 1 year
- Validity: Solely for entering Germany
- Re-entry Permit: Valid until your first registration (Anmeldung) in Germany
Stage 2: Student Residence Permit (Ausländerbehörde)
Once you arrive in Germany, you'll register at the Bürgeramt and schedule an appointment with the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Office):
- Duration: 1-2 years (can be extended for the duration of your university studies)
- Maximum: Up to the total duration of your studies (e.g., 4 years for a Bachelor's, 2 years for a Master's; PhD duration varies)
- Post-graduation: after successfully completing your studies in Germany you can apply for a job-search residence permit of up to 18 months (§ 20(1) no. 1 AufenthG; your living costs must be covered, it is not automatic)
Extension
- Apply to the Ausländerbehörde at least 3 months in advance.
- Provide your current Immatrikulationsbescheinigung (enrollment certificate).
- Show your blocked account (Sperrkonto) balance (is it still sufficient?).
- Ensure your health insurance is valid.
- Submit proof of academic progress (Leistungsnachweis) — this becomes particularly important after your 4th semester.
Important Time Rule
- Residence law sets no weekly hour cap; the limit is 140 working days a year (Arbeitstagekonto). You can also count by week: a week with up to 20 hours during the lecture period, and every week outside the lecture period, counts as 2.5 working days — whichever is more favourable for you applies. Student assistant jobs (studentische Nebentätigkeit) are not counted (§ 16b(3) AufenthG, checked 15.10.2026).
- You're allowed to work up to 140 working days a year (Arbeitstagekonto; a day of up to 4 hours counts as half a day).
- You're expected to show "sufficient academic progress" within 3-4 semesters — otherwise, your extension might be denied.
After Graduation
If you successfully completed your studies in Germany, you can get a residence permit to look for work for up to 18 months (§ 20 AufenthG, checked 15.10.2026). It is not automatic: you apply at the Ausländerbehörde and your living costs must be covered; it cannot be extended beyond 18 months. Once you find a job, you can switch to a Blue Card or a work permit.
