Visa

After your visa application, how long does it take on average to receive a positive or negative decision?

✓ Answered · 1 min read · How much · 157 views

The decision period after application is on average 6-12 weeks, but can be longer during peak season.

Processes

Stage Typical duration
Appointment booking 6-12 weeks (summer: 4-6 months)
Document submission → dispatch to Germany Same day - 1 week
Ausländerbehörde review in Germany 4-10 weeks
Result → consulate 1 week
Passport call (visa printing) 1-2 days

Accelerating Factors

  • If the Universität triggers the "vorab" procedure in Germany (pre-approval)
  • Complete, organized documents
  • Insurance and Sperrkonto prepared in advance
  • Ankara > Istanbul (workload difference)
  • Application outside of September/March (semester starts are very busy)

Delaying Factors

  • Missing or contradictory documents
  • Unclear source of funding (if sponsor letter lacks detail)
  • Suspicious motivation letter (perceived as copy-pasted)
  • Previous Schengen rejection

Practical Advice

Count down according to the academic calendar:

  • For Wintersemester (October) → apply by end of May
  • For Sommersemester (April) → apply in November

Late application = risk of not finding an an appointment. While waiting, you can travel as your passport will not remain at the consulate.
