What are the GPA and language requirements for a scholarship?

For scholarship applications, GPA and language proficiency are critical criteria. These vary depending on the scholarship type.

#GPA Requirements

#DAAD Master Studies

• Minimum: Bachelor's GPA 2.5/4.0 (Turkish grade 80+ / 100)
• Recommended: GPA 3.0/4.0+ (Turkish grade 85-90+)
• For high achievement: GPA 3.5/4.0+ (Turkish grade 90+)
• Some university programs require a GPA of 3.0+ for admission

#DAAD PhD

• Master GPA 2.5/4.0+ minimum (Turkish grade 80+)
• Success in the Master's thesis is important
• Publication/project experience can compensate for GPA

In the German system, 1.0 is the best, 4.0 is the worst — the exact opposite of the Turkish system!

#Language Requirements

#German

#Master Programs

#PhD Programs

#English

#For Master/PhD (English program)

#Accepted Exams from Turkey

• YDS / e-YDS / YÖKDİL: DAAD accepts some categories (80+ points = English proficiency)
• TOEFL ITP: DAAD accepts
• TestDaF / Goethe / DSH: For German proficiency
• IELTS / TOEFL iBT / Cambridge: For English proficiency

#Language Certificate Validity

#DAAD's Specific Expectations

#Regarding Grades

• "Sehr gut" in Germany corresponds to a grade of = 1.0-1.5 German GPA
• DAAD always selects students from the first-second tier (top 20%)
• "Class valedictorian" or "faculty valedictorian" is highly valued by DAAD

#Regarding Language

• The academic motivation letter must be written in German/English
• The certificate must be valid at the time of application
• DAAD may offer language course support during the admission process (up to 6 months)

#Other Criteria

• Academic performance (GPA + class rank)
• Language proficiency (German + English)
• Quality of motivation letter
• Reference letters (academic)
• Publication/project experience (bonus, but important)
• Practical experience (internship, volunteer work)
• Clarity of career plan

#Practical Advice

#If GPA is Low (75-80)

• Balance with a high language certificate (TestDaF 5, C1)
• Gather strong reference letters
• Add publications/projects (if you're not class valedictorian, stand out elsewhere)
• KAAD or smaller foundations accept GPA 2.5+

#If No Language Certificate

• Apply with TestDaF + IELTS dual certificates
• Some DAAD categories include language courses (you can apply with B1)
• Goethe-Zertifikat B2 in Turkey → minimum for DAAD

#If Both GPA and Language are Low

• TÜBİTAK scholarships + PhD in Turkey + partial research in Germany as an alternative
• Erasmus+ Studies (more flexible admission criteria)
• University admission + Sperrkonto (you can go without a scholarship)
