Diploma Recognition

Is it easier to get your diploma recognized from Germany or your home country?

✓ Answered · 1 min read · Community · 98 views

German bodies always make the decision, and the main procedures can be started from Türkiye — being in Germany is usually not required. Which procedure you need depends on the purpose:

Applying to a university

You don't need a separate "diploma recognition". Your school-leaving certificate (HZB) or bachelor's degree is assessed by the university or uni-assist. A university may ask for a ZAB statement, but that is not a general rule.

ZAB Statement of Comparability (foreign university degree)

  • Fully online; you log in with a BundID account, which anyone can create with just an e-mail address, regardless of nationality.
  • Simple scans usually suffice; generally no apostille or certification.
  • ZAB does not require a German address or Anmeldung.
  • Fee 208 €, usually about 3 months.

Professional recognition (regulated professions)

You can apply from abroad. The competent authority depends on the profession and where in Germany you plan to work — the Anerkennungs-Finder tells you which one.

Exception

Some Land services are tied to residence: in Berlin, for example, recognising a school certificate for work or vocational training requires living in Berlin or a Berlin job/training offer.
