How much money do I need for a blocked account (Sperrkonto)?
For a German student visa in 2026 you must prove 992 € per month, i.e. 11,904 € per year. This amount has applied since 1 September 2024; before that, a lower amount was required.
What the amount depends on
The figure is tied to the maximum BAföG rate. It is not adjusted every year as a matter of course – it changes only if the BAföG rate changes. Check the mission's current information before you apply.
By visa type
- Student visa (including Studienkolleg): based on 992 € per month; the missions' leaflet lists 11,904 € per year. If you plan a shorter stay, ask the mission how many months you need to cover.
- Language-course visa (§ 16f): according to the language-course leaflet of the German missions in Türkiye, at least 1,091 € per month. The page has no update date, so double-check it before applying.
Is a Sperrkonto mandatory?
No, it is one option. The missions also accept a Verpflichtungserklärung – a formal declaration by someone living in Germany that they will cover your living costs. The authorities check whether your sponsor can actually pay; no fixed income threshold is published in official sources. Whether other proof such as a scholarship is accepted is explained on the missions' study page.
In practice
- You deposit the amount before the visa application and attach the bank's confirmation.
- Once you are in Germany, the money is released to you in monthly instalments. Procedures and fees depend on the account provider; no specific provider is required.
