What is a WG, how do you search for one?

WG (Wohngemeinschaft) is the most common type of student accommodation in Germany: sharing an apartment with 2-5 people. Everyone has their own room, while the kitchen and bathroom are shared.

#How to Search

1. WG-Gesucht.de — the largest platform (free). Filter by: city, budget, room type (möbliert/not möbliert).
2. Studenten-WG.de — for students only.
3. eBay Kleinanzeigen — local listings, high risk of scams.
4. Facebook groups — follow groups like "WG Berlin", "WG München".
5. University notice boards — physical ads in the Mensa and libraries.

#Process

• Find a listing you like → send a Selbstbeschreibung (self-introduction message), in German/English as appropriate.
• You'll be invited to a get-to-know-you meeting, called a WG-Casting (online or in person).
• If they like you, a contract will be signed.

#Important

• Finding your first WG takes an average of 6-8 weeks. Start early.
• It's very difficult with a German level below A2 — use the "international" filter for English-speaking WGs (plenty in Berlin, München, Köln).
• If you need an address for your visa, a temporary solution: short-term accommodation.
