How do you apply for a Studierendenwerk dormitory?

Studierendenwerk (student services) is the institution that operates state-subsidized dormitories in every city. It's 30-50% cheaper than a WG but has long waiting times.

#Application Process

1. Go to the website of the Studierendenwerk in your city (e.g., studierendenwerk-berlin.de).
2. Fill out the online application form — generally including the following fields:
   • Personal information (passport/ID number)
   • University and program (expected application information if you don't have your Zulassung yet)
   • Room preference: single room / WG / family dormitory
   • Desired start date
3. Some cities require an application fee of 30-50 € (Hamburg, München).
4. You will be placed on the waiting list with a confirmation email.
5. When your turn comes, you will receive an offer (Mietangebot) — you must accept it within 2-3 days.

#Strategy

• Apply as soon as you receive your acceptance letter (rejecting an offer when it comes does not remove you from the list).
• There is priority for Internationale Studierende in some dormitories (especially for the first semester).
• You can apply to 2-3 different dormitories simultaneously.

Rent: 220-380 €/month, includes: room + internet + heating + kitchen equipment in some dormitories.
