What happens if I forget to deregister from the Rundfunkbeitrag (broadcasting fee) when leaving Germany?
If you leave Germany without deregistering from the Rundfunkbeitrag (the broadcasting fee for radio and TV), the contributions can keep being charged and debt can build up in your name.
What this can lead to
- Such debts generally do not appear directly in your Führungszeugnis (German certificate of good conduct).
- However, unpaid amounts can become the subject of legal collection and enforcement proceedings.
What to do before you leave
- Deregister from the Rundfunkbeitrag and keep the confirmation.
- Check your other contracts and obligations too (for example rent, phone, internet, insurance) and make sure they are properly cancelled.
Caveat: if you have already left and notice that you forgot to deregister, contact the Beitragsservice as soon as possible to clarify your situation. Official information is available at rundfunkbeitrag.de.
