Is there an age limit for universities in Germany, and how do you choose a university?
No, there is no general age limit for university admission in Germany. The Framework Act for Higher Education (HRG § 27) ties the right to study to the required qualification rather than age, and the student residence permit (§ 16b AufenthG) sets no age condition — it requires admission by the university.
Where age matters in practice
- Health insurance: compulsory student health insurance applies at most until age 30. After that it continues only if the type of training or family or personal reasons justify it; otherwise you need voluntary statutory or private insurance.
- Scholarships and funding: some programmes set their own age limits. BAföG, for example, has a limit of 45, and foreigners' eligibility for BAföG is restricted separately. Check the conditions of each scholarship on its own page.
Choosing a university
- Programme fit: does your certificate (and, for a master's, your bachelor's subject) meet the programme's requirements?
- Language: is the programme taught in German or English, and which certificate is required? There is no single Germany-wide level.
- Fees: these depend on the Land and the institution; Baden-Württemberg, for example, charges non-EU students 1,500 € per semester, and TUM charges programme-specific fees to newly enrolled non-EU students.
- Application route and deadlines: direct or through uni-assist — the university decides.
- City and lifestyle: according to your own priorities.
