Germany Consulate Visa Appointment — 2026 Waiting Times and City Strategy

Waiting times for 36F/41.f student visa appointments at German consulates in Turkey have increased to 2-6 months. Which city is faster, iDATA or direct consulate, how to open an appointment — a strategic guide with real community experiences.

Germany Consulate Visa Appointment — 2026 Strategy

30-second summary: German consulates in Turkey (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir) provide student visa appointments via iDATA. Waiting times vary from 2 weeks to 6 months depending on the city. The most critical rule: Start booking an appointment BEFORE you receive your university acceptance letter (Zulassung) — the remaining documents can be completed by the appointment date.

First: 36F or 41.f or 36.f?

The most commonly confused abbreviation in the Turkish community. The code on the visa application form:

Code Meaning For whom?
36F General student visa (with acceptance letter) If you have received an acceptance for Bachelor's/Master's/Studienkolleg
36.f / 41.f Visa for university application (no acceptance yet) If you plan to prepare your application while in Germany, a language course + university application combination
Sprachkurs Language course visa only If you have no university plans, only an intensive German course

These codes are used not by the consulate but by the iDATA online appointment system — choosing the correct one when applying is critical.

Which city has faster appointments?

The most frequent pain point we hear from the community. Q1 2026 general outlook:

Consulate iDATA waiting time Note
Istanbul 1-3 months (busy) Half of Turkey's population converges here
Ankara 2-4 weeks Faster, but no risk of rejection for "residence Istanbul" — you can apply from any city you wish
Izmir 2-6 weeks Fewer applications, but Aegean Region students are prioritized

Real question from the community: "If I apply for a 36F visa appointment for Istanbul now, when will it be scheduled, does anyone know?"

Practical answer: Istanbul's intensity varies with the season. It peaks between March-May (summer semester applications) + September-November (winter semester). Switching to Ankara/Izmir during these months can sometimes save 6-8 weeks.

iDATA or direct consulate?

In Istanbul/Ankara/Izmir, iDATA is mandatory — the consulate does not provide direct appointments. The process:

  1. https://www.idata.com.tr/ → user registration
  2. Visa type → Select National Visa (D Visa)
  3. Category → Studienbewerber (36.f) or Studium (36F)
  4. Select city + date
  5. Pay the €75 fee online (visa fee is separate, cash or card at the appointment)

From the community: "Did you have your visa interview at the consulate or iDATA?"

Answer: The interview always takes place at the consulate. iDATA only handles preliminary document checks and appointment management. In Ankara, sometimes a consulate official conducts the interview, while the documents remain at iDATA.

Appointment shortage crisis — 3 strategies

Strategy 1: "Cancellation refresh" technique

Canceled appointments appear in the system every hour. Keep the iDATA panel live:

  • Automatic refresh extension in the browser (Tab Reloader)
  • 09:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 05:00 PM — cancellation peaks at these times

Strategy 2: City flexibility

It does not matter where your residence is — you can apply from any consulate. If Istanbul is busy, jump to Ankara.

Strategy 3: Early application document preparation

Even while waiting for university acceptance, reserve an appointment as soon as it opens. Complete missing documents by the appointment date — things like passport, A1 certificate, biometric photo can be gathered in 1 week.

What documents are needed for the appointment?

The iDATA website has a complete list for each visa type. For a typical 36F (general student) visa:

  1. Completed VIDEX form (videx.diplo.de — 2 copies, signed)
  2. Passport (valid for at least 1 year) + photocopy of all pages
  3. 2 biometric photos (white background, 35×45mm)
  4. University acceptance letter (Zulassung) — original + German translation
  5. Sperrkonto (blocked account) confirmation (€11,904/year, compare using Blocked Account Finder)
  6. Health insurance (AT/11 form, Schengen valid, 90 days)
  7. German/English language certificate (A1 + level required by the school)
  8. Motivation letter (German or English, 1 page)
  9. Educational CV (academic history, chronological)
  10. Financial proof (Sperrkonto + if there's an additional source letter)
  11. €75 visa fee (card or cash at the appointment)

From the community: "Did iDATA take the originals of your diploma and IELTS documents?"

Yes — the original is seen and returned. The diploma is then sent to Germany, while a photocopy remains in the file. The passport, however, remains with them until the visa is stamped (usually 4-12 weeks).

How does the interview go?

10-20 minutes. Standard questions:

  • Why Germany? Why this university/city?
  • Will you return to Turkey after graduation? (Most critical question — proof of intent)
  • Will your family stay in Turkey? Where will the financial support come from?
  • What is your German level? Do you have a certificate?
  • How will you arrange accommodation?

From the community: "Consulate officials are not oppressive, just briefly explain your purpose and goal. If you can speak a little German, half the battle is won."

Don't stress, don't exaggerate, don't prolong. Direct + clear answer, respectfully hand over supporting documents.

Duration and outcome

Step Duration
Appointment waiting 2 weeks — 6 months
Interview duration 10-20 min
Visa processing (from consulate to Berlin) 4-12 weeks
Delivery after visa issuance 1-2 weeks (courier or in person)
Total (worst-case scenario) 6-9 months

Important: Start booking an appointment at least 4 months before your university start date.

Frequently Asked Questions

"The consulate requires A1 German for a conditional acceptance visa — is that true?" Yes. When applying for conditional acceptance (Zulassung mit Auflagen) + German language school, a minimum A1 certificate is required. Goethe, telc, or ÖSD are valid.

"Does the consulate or school require a language certificate for a German language preparatory course application?" Yes — the school may require A1, the consulate A2 or B1 (depending on the level you will start at). The entry level will be stated in the acceptance letter.

"Do they confiscate the passport?" Yes, it remains at the consulate until the visa is stamped. If you have urgent travel, mention it at the appointment — sometimes it's returned 1-2 weeks earlier, but your visa application might be put back in the queue.

"Should I go to the appointment for 36F before receiving my Telc B1 result?" No. If you go with missing documents, they will be put on hold with a "missing document" note. Go after your B1 result is out — it will process faster.

"Can I fill out a paper form instead of the VIDEX form?" No, VIDEX online is mandatory (videx.diplo.de). Print + sign + bring to the appointment.
