Deutschlandticket 2026: Price, Coverage and the Student Semester Ticket
30-second summary: From January 2026 the Deutschlandticket costs €63 per month and covers all regional and local public transport (not long-distance ICE/IC). At many universities students get the Deutschlandsemesterticket (~€34.80/month) via the Semesterbeitrag.
Public transport is a real chunk of your cost of living in Germany. The right ticket choice saves tens of euros a month.
What is the Deutschlandticket?
A subscription that bundles regional and local public transport across Germany (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, bus, tram, Regionalbahn) into one ticket. It does not cover long-distance high-speed trains like ICE/IC.
Price (2026)
- Standard: €63 per month from January 2026 (it was €58 in 2025). Monthly subscription, cancellable monthly.
- Student (Deutschlandsemesterticket): 60% of the standard price, about €34.80/month (≈ €208.80 per semester). Usually paid once within the Semesterbeitrag (semester fee); not offered at every university.
How to get it
- Standard: via Deutsche Bahn or your local transit operator's app/subscription (BVG, MVV, VRR…).
- Student: through your university's enrolment/Semesterbeitrag; automatic at participating universities.
Is it worth it for you?
If you travel regularly within the city or region, it almost always pays off. If your university offers the semester ticket, you ride cheaper without needing the standard one.
⚠️ Prices and coverage may change; confirm the current amount on Deutsche Bahn and your university's official page.
